How does Chris Lieto do it?

Chris Lieto has long been a popular favorite. He is well liked for his friendly and approachable manner, his unassuming personality, his sincere desire to share and give back, and his dedication to family. Here in the area, most everyone knows who Chris Lieto is, claims to know him or his next of kin personally, and even expresses fondness of him. He’s the local boy who has done good, and the pretty-boy who makes cougars swoon. In an area where road bike racing has a longer, illustrious tradition than triathlon (as well as the typical infamy of being a closed, snooty subculture), Lieto has not only won over roadies by excelling at their sport as he has at tri, he has also unceasingly made friends in both camps. Which brings us to our first consideration of how this man got to be such a successful saddle jockey:
Lance Armstrong's Mellow Classic Mt. Bike Race

I had a great time in Austin last weekend with Lance Armstrong and his family. The weekend ended with my first mountain bike race. The Mellow Classic Mt. Bike race was held on Lance's Juan Paleto Ranch. It was a 3 lap race totaling 24 miles. I was doing alright for 2 laps considering my lack or riding since Ironman, but the last lap I fell apart. I have not bonked like that in years. Racing on a mountain bike is a lot different than the long endurance days I am used to. Should have had more for lunch before the race. I finally found my gel I dropped on lap 2 and started to feel better. Little late though. It was a lot of fun and I look forward to the next race this spring.
2nd at Ironman World Champs

Chris Lieto finished 2nd at the Ironman World Championship in Kona Hawaii. The best and fittest athletes in the World gathered on the Island of Hawaii for the toughest race encompassing 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and a marathon 26.2 miles. Chris had an amazing day leading the race with authority for over 5 hours. It was not until a couple miles to go that he was finally caught, but Chris fought back with passion and finished a strong 2nd place. He is in the midst of resting and getting excited planning his schedule for 2010.

Speed Unleashed
Champions are made through victory. It’s always impressive to watch an athlete who masters the measure of his/her sport and beats the competition to the line. In an event like last weekend’s Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, victory means showing the world that your one of the greatest athletes on the planet. Multiple disciplines in 100+ Degree heat, for more than 8 grueling hours, clearly make this event one of the top challenges in the sporting world. And to win defines the victor as a champion.
